Building Community to Reach Communities

Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod World Mission, through its National Missions Staff, has commissioned TCN to develop a process designed to assist local congregations in becoming more effective in reaching their communities with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Based on research among effective mission movements world wide, and pilot projects field testing materials over the past five years, the Transforming Churches Process includes three components and a number of ancillary resources.

Groups Ablaze! is an important TCN Resource
Groups Ablaze! is a system of 6 six-week study modules designed to assist small groups within a parish to reach out to their unchurched neighbors with the Gospel. It is a major resource for congregations in the Transformation process, as reaching out to unchurched people lies at the core of this process. Details of these modules can be found on our web site: www.GroupsAblaze.org.
It is strongly suggested that congregations that have scheduled a consultation weekend in the TCN Process would prepare by forming one or more small groups to go through the first of these six-week modules, Motivation for Mission. To introduce this module, there is a power-point presentation which can be downloaded by clicking on this link:

TCN Core Competencies Assessment:
Survey and Report
Building Community to Reach Communities
TCN is excited to announce the opportunity for pastors/churches in the TCN process to participate in the Core Competencies (CC) Assessment. Through participating in this assessment, you will receive insightful feedback on how your congregants score you and your church on the 8 Core Competencies, which have been confirmed statistically to impact your effectiveness in outreach to the community.
Information is power, and our goal is to empower you and your congregation to reach your community with the Gospel. The Core Competencies Assessment will help you understand your strengths and how to capitalize on them, while learning how to build up the areas where improvement is needed.

According to the Chinese calendar, 2010 will be known as the Year of the Tiger. (How ironic is that, in light of the famous fall from grace of a certain athlete with that same moniker?) Others are hailing 2010 as the Year of the Mac (the computer, not the burger), the Year of Living Dangerously, The Year of Online Shopping, and on it goes. Compared to past years of the Rat and Pig, I suppose some of these new “years” wouldn’t be so bad. Recently, one guy even wrote a book about his Year of Living Biblically, a fascinating account about his quest to live the ultimate biblical life. His goal was to follow every single rule in the Bible – as literally as possible.

There is an unknown constituency in the midst of the Ablaze! goal to revitalize 2,000 congregations by 2017: they are the ones with no church home or those who don't yet know Jesus as their Savior.

Pastors Andy Nelson and Greg Prauner of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ridgewood, NJ, were excited by the interactions they had with people in the community when they tried prayer walking and community surveys as a consequence of their involvement in a Pastor's Learning Community. After the congregation's consultation weekend, they organized members of the congregaiton to employ the same activities as part of their envisioning process. More then 50 people participated in the surveys in Ridgewood and three neighboring communities, and prayer-walked in teams, meeting people and engaging them in conversations. Everyone was apprehensive to start with, but when they reported back after the events they were very enthusiastic about their positive experiences out in the community. A concerted effort was also made to survey community leaders, who were very helpful in pointing out needs in the community which the congregation could address. A large amount of responses to the surveys was collated by two members who have a business and marketing background. Now that the congregation is going forward with the envisioning process, they have first-hand information on their community as they pray about which mission targets to engage first.

One of the key principles of the TCN process is measurement. By tracking our progress we can see what works and what doesn't, as well as our specific impact on church growth and health. New statistics from the Mid-South District show an average growth rate of 13.9% for consulting churches six months after consultation, with numerical growth as high as 71 people. We are asking those who are involved in the TCN process to share some stories of people coming to faith in Jesus through the witnessing or outreach of their congregation. Please e-mail your testimonies to Nicholas.Tieman@gmail.com.

HELP US ASSESS THE TCN PROCESS
Measuring progress is important to each congregation involved in the TCN process to celebrate wins and concentrate on areas that need improvement. It is also important to the TCN process itself to track how congregations are doing in order to constantly measure effectiveness and upgrade quality. Congregations which have held consultations are asked to submit monthly statistics to TCN using an Excel spreadsheet provided below. Download the spreadsheet, fill in the metrics and send it as an e-mail attachment to: Resources@missions.com

District TCN Facilitators: If you have held a consultation, please let TCN know about it by filling in the Completed Consultation Form and submitting it to: djborn@aol.com
