Coaching the Pastor and Leaders of the Congregation

Coaching After a congregational consultation, the congregation decides upon whether or not to go ahead with the rest of the transforming process. If they do, they accept all the prescriptions and covenant with the district consultation team to begin working on them.

The congregation is not left on their own after this, but is involved in a coaching process for at least a year after the consultation. In that time, monthly contact from the consulting team will help the pastor and leaders of the congregation with their progress toward the goals, as well as developing strategies designed to reach certain bench marks which are consistent with the national revitalization definitions. These benchmarks include a minimum of 5% growth in worship attendance each year, and increased percentages of adult to child baptisms and confirmations. Growth in healthy small group life and community involvement are also measured.

The pastor will be involved in a monthly coaching session either in person or on line, and a minimum of 4 visits a year to the congregational leaders will be made by the consultation team. The Transforming Congregations Network has developed a coaching manual which will set the tone for strategic action and accountability on the part of the local leadership team.

The Pastor will also be directed to join a regional learning community, where he can receive the support of other pastors and church leaders involved in the TCN process.
